Accessorized Letters

It is so easy to let time get away from you. My most recent deadlines have been to prepare to share the way I use the Zentangle (R) method for my artwork. Since I am a calligrapher, I love working with words or individual letters and adding touches of patterns.
I call this, Accessorizing your Letters.

A good structured letter is essential.
Then accessories can be added to build up a creative letter.

Wish I could say I have been spending lots of time on my samples, but I only a few at this point.

I've been working on an on-line class that started in February . . . certainly a class that is loosening up my letters (for good or bad) Did this piece on an airplane which was rather bumpy, so no choice but to play and let go of perfection.

Not my normal colors, but enjoyed pulling out some old embossing markers and heat embossing with clear powder. No preset notion of where this was going . . . truly doodling and letting the pen go where it wanted.

Yesterday was a creative jewel.
How fun to have work behind me and get to play!
Spending time on the journal challenges that are posted HERE
Love the idea of writing, journaling and Zentangles all in one place.
Also, I picked a small journal, so it feels do-able.
I like to have a full page spread with 2 weeks of prompts blending together.

Student work at workshop

I was so pleased to see the amazing letters my students created after just 2 hours at a workshop. We started by looking at classical Roman letters. Then we played with patterns and shapes that could be added on the inside and around our letters. Then each student picked just one letter to apply these ideas to. Here are some more examples of their work . . .

Alphatangles class

Originally uploaded by long village lettering

I taught a class today on two of my favorite artforms - calligraphy and Zentangle. I had seven energetic students. I started by teaching some principles of good letter forms. Then I used a process to help students develop their own letter. This letter was then used to add decorative patterns and little touches. Watch for further posts about this class.

Steampunk Exchange

Where does the time go?
Obviously I'm not in control of it.
If I was, I would have more time to play with Zentangle pieces.
Always fun to get introduced to something completely new to me.
Obviously, others have known about 'Steampunk' artwork and creations.
But it is new to me.
Here is my first attempt to create something in the steampunk style.
Rather fun.

I wanted to add a few more ATCs I have been working on. Our local group gets together 2x a month. We are very casual and have no plan for the 2 hours. It usually flies by! The creative juices just bounce around as we share, teach and create. We often give ourselves homework. Last time we said to work on shading. So here is the before & after:

Sanibelle pattern

Use My Tangle Challenge
This new challenge use to use Tricia Faraone's pattern, Sanibelle. I really enjoy this pattern. Again, it must be me, but I struggle to make this pattern look natural using the original instructions. So, I go about it in another way. So here are the options:

I think my style comes from a pattern that is in 'Yoga for your Brain'
you will find Stature on page 26 in this book by Sandy Steen Bartholomew.

I like to place the center stroke and then build outwards with the same stroke over and over.
Here it is on a page with other patterns.

Journal Challenge - catching up

So I decide to do the journal challenge. Each week a theme to write about and a tangle challenge. Thought I would get right on it, but I did not. So yesterday & today I worked on catching up.

This is week one - reflections on 2011. After I had completed the '11' I saw it - The Twin Towers.

I finally figured out a method that works for me to create 'Tri-Po' by Sue Clark. Yes, most of you probably could already do this one, but sometimes certain patterns just challenge my way of thinking. I just could not make the triangle balance using her steps. So after many attempts I got something to work that I'm happy with. So here are my instructions:
I just love this tangle by Sue, and now I can do it! Different strokes for different folks.

Yesterday was a creative day @ Random Arts in Saluda, NC. We gather together for a bi-monthly time to tangle, play with patterns, share ideas, work in journals, whatever the flow is. Yesterday the flow was strong! So here is my spread for week 4 & 5.

Week 4 was to use bubbles or circles in the art. The writing was to flow from Gratitude.
Week 5 was to use a tic-tac-toe layout and use 5 spaces for patterns and 4 spots for writing reflections on how imperfection can enhance life.

My spread for week 2 & 3 can be found at:

Linda Farmer

This is so worth passing along . . .
by supporting Linda Farmer's site you can get a fabulous guide of patterns!

five 'A' patterns

I am trying to make a sample of the official Zentangle (R) Tangles created by Rick & Maria. It is my best understanding that there were originally 102 patterns.
I am up 135, January 23, 2012.
I thought this would be easy to find these patterns, but it is turning out to be more challenging than first appeared. So, I'm thinking about a contest. Offering a FREE print of my ZIA of 'Peace'. Still working out the details. Will post once I come up with the guidelines.
Until then . . .
Here are my twinchies with the 5 letter A patterns . . .
