Where do patterns come from?

#gellyroll30

This is not a piece inspired by the Zentangle method.

This is a piece inspired by the scribes of medieval times who crafted hand lettered and illustrated books. So much of the designs that they doodled in the margins and around the letters are showing up today - everything old is new again.

So as a calligrapher, I have studied these works of art for 25 years. I have been fortunate to have classes with many internationally known calligraphers who have studied the masters as well. I have a love for studying anything that contains letters, calligraphy and type. I feel like a sponge sometimes trying to absorb everything I see.

Here is just one sample of a medieval manuscript page that depicts the typical versal letters used as a focal point on a page and all the wonderful doodles these scribes played with on a page. If you are also interested in this style, I have a file on Pinterest, you can visit that @: Calligraphy - Manuscripts

This piece is 12.5" x 10" - only tools used are Sakura's Metallic Gelly Roll pens. They glide so smoothly with a brilliant gel ink.
